Hideo Kojima recently revealed that Sony abruptly ended its partnership on his upcoming project, Physint, during a brief Zoom call back in June. Speaking with IGN, the legendary developer noted that PlayStation provided no specific explanation for their withdrawal from the venture. While Kojima admitted he did not press for detailed answers during the meeting, he mentioned that communication from Sony has remained silent ever since. Despite the sudden nature of the breakup, Kojima was quick to clarify that there is no active dispute between him and the company following a collaborative relationship spanning nearly three decades, though he confessed he would have preferred receiving the news sooner.
The fallout left Kojima Productions searching for a new partner for several months before they eventually aligned with Xbox. The transition felt relatively seamless given that the studio was already collaborating with Microsoft on another title, OD. This shift comes amidst conflicting narratives regarding why Sony walked away. A previous report from Bloomberg suggested that Physint had fallen behind schedule and exceeded its budget, while further alleging that the Death Stranding series failed to meet internal revenue goals. However, Kojima Productions has dismissed those reports as unverifiable, insisting that the studio remains both healthy and financially profitable.
When questioned about whether Physint might still find a home on PlayStation hardware in the future, Kojima stated that he simply does not know and deferred those questions to Xbox. He expressed belief that Microsoft aims to reach as wide an audience as possible, but stopped short of confirming any multiplatform plans. For now, it appears the final destination for one of the industry’s most anticipated titles remains officially undecided as fans await further announcements from the team.
