French President Emmanuel Macron spent the weekend in the overseas collectivity of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, using the visit to emphasize the deep bonds between France and Canada. While some observers suggested the trip was designed to send a geopolitical signal, Macron dismissed those notions, telling reporters that we should not be so obsessed with sending messages. Instead, he framed the journey as an opportunity for the small archipelago, located just off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, to turn a new page while reaffirming friendships in the region.
A central highlight of the visit was a scheduled working lunch and joint appearance with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Macron described the meeting as a strong gesture of friendship, particularly noting Carney’s growing ties with Brussels. Beyond diplomatic sentiment, there were clear economic motives behind the gathering. The French president highlighted Canada’s vast reserves of rare earth elements and liquefied natural gas, indicating that both France and the European Union are eager to secure strategic supply contracts to ensure energy and mineral stability across Europe.
These discussions come amid heightened tension involving United States President Donald Trump, who recently criticized the possibility of Canada becoming an associate member of the EU. Trump labeled the prospect laughable and threatened severe tariffs against Europe if such a move were viewed as a hostile act. Adding to the friction, Trump previously shared a map on social media depicting various North American territories, including Saint Pierre and Miquelon, under U.S. influence, shortly after securing a security agreement regarding Greenland with Denmark.
As Macron prepares to head to New York for the UN General Assembly, where further deals regarding Arctic security may be finalized, he took a moment on social media to reflect on his time in the territory. Writing on X, he expressed pride in being among citizens of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, reminding followers that while oceans may separate them geographically, they remain united by their shared values and destiny within the Republic.
