Muted US response to UK’s West Bank sanctions may reflect simmering frustration

The United Kingdom recently ignited a diplomatic firestorm by unveiling sanctions against Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, citing a moral necessity to protect the possibility of a two state solution. Israel reacted with immediate and sharp defiance, threatening to shut down Britain’s diplomatic mission to the Palestinians and banning several British lawmakers from entering the country. As other European nations signaled their intent to join the trade ban, many expected the United States to step in as Israel’s primary protector and deliver a stern rebuke to London.

However, the anticipated American backlash has been surprisingly quiet. While some officials initially hinted at potential repercussions, Secretary of State Marco Rubio offered only a lukewarm response, stating simply that the U.S. would not follow Britain’s lead without offering any direct condemnation of the move. Even President Trump remained noncommittal, noting he intended to speak with Israeli leaders to better understand the situation rather than rushing to defend them. This measured approach stands in stark contrast to the vocal demands from pro Israel Republicans in Congress who called for punitive measures against the UK.

This silence suggests a growing undercurrent of frustration within the Trump administration toward Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Tensions have reportedly simmered as Trump attempts to manage a volatile conflict with Iran and pursue a peace initiative in Gaza that requires Israeli military withdrawal. These goals have often clashed with Netanyahu’s own strategies, particularly regarding escalations against Hezbollah in Lebanon which threatened to derail delicate U.S. diplomacy. For Trump, backing Israel unconditionally against its European allies may no longer be seen as a strategic win.

Furthermore, there is evidence that Washington is increasingly embarrassed by unchecked settler violence in the West Bank, which has become a sticking point with key Gulf Arab allies necessary for mediating Gaza ceasefire deals. By refusing to aggressively shield Israel from British sanctions, the White House appears to be signaling that Netanyahu’s current trajectory is hindering broader American regional priorities. For now, it seems Trump believes that protecting settlement activity is simply not worth the political cost of alienating Europe or stalling his pursuit of a definitive Middle East legacy.
