Hideo Kojima’s ‘Physint’ Moves From PlayStation to Xbox as ‘Death Stranding’ Creator Plots TV and Film Projects With New Publishing Partner

In a surprising shakeup for the gaming industry, legendary developer Hideo Kojima is shifting gears and bringing his highly anticipated project Physint over to Xbox. The action espionage title was originally slated for publication under Sony’s PlayStation, but according to Kojima, the partnership ended abruptly in June when PlayStation Studios decided to cancel the project. Refusing to let the vision die, Kojima spent several months searching for a new collaborator before finding a kindred spirit in Microsoft’s gaming division.

The move marks a significant departure given the deep history between Kojima and PlayStation, most notably seen in the success of the Death Stranding series. However, the transition appears amicable on paper, with PlayStation issuing a statement expressing continued admiration for Kojima’s vision despite their decision to step away from this specific title. For Xbox, acquiring Physint is a major win that strengthens its portfolio alongside OD, another upcoming Kojima horror project created in tandem with filmmaker Jordan Peele.

Beyond just software, this new alliance signals a broader strategic pivot toward multimedia storytelling. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and Kojima have reportedly been in talks for months about integrating game development with film and television projects. This aligns perfectly with Kojima’s longtime obsession with blurring the lines between cinema and interactive media, noting that modern digital filming techniques and game engines like Unreal now make these two worlds nearly indistinguishable during production.

Industry analysts suggest that while American fans will be thrilled by the accessibility of Physint on Xbox hardware, the deal may serve an even larger purpose for Microsoft globally. By partnering with one of Japan’s most influential creative figures, Xbox hopes to bolster its footprint in Asian markets where it has traditionally struggled against Sony’s dominance. While specifics on the planned TV and movie collaborations remain under wraps, the partnership ensures that Kojima’s penchant for genre defying narratives will have a powerful corporate engine behind them across multiple screens.
