Former Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed profound distress during a rare public appearance in Cologne this week, describing the recent electoral victory of the Alternative for Germany in Saxony Anhalt as simply shocking. Speaking at the Digital X trade fair, Merkel admitted that as a member of the Christian Democratic Union, her heart bleeds following the results. For Merkel, who grew up in former East Germany and rose to become the country’s most successful leader, the surge of the far right represents more than just a political shift; she characterized it as a genuine cut in modern German history.
The landslide victory for the AfD has sent shockwaves through the German establishment, leaving analysts and economists sounding alarms about the future stability of the region. While some viewed the outcome as inevitable, the scale of the win surpassed expectations and left Merkel’s own party struggling to find its footing. In response to the crisis, she urged current politicians to completely overhaul their communication strategies, emphasizing that leaders must focus on individually addressing citizens rather than relying on broad messaging.
Adding fuel to the fire, U.S. President Donald Trump weighed in on social media, celebrating what he called a big night for the populists. Trump attributed the success of the AfD to voter frustration with German immigration policies, which he labeled as horrible. In a nod to his own political branding, he concluded his post with a modified slogan, urging followers to make Germany great again.
The political turmoil sparked immediate unrest on the streets of Cologne, where thousands gathered to protest against right wing extremism. Around 9,000 demonstrators marched under slogans demanding a defense of democracy and calling for an end to political agitation throughout Saxony Anhalt and beyond. Organizers stated that since far right extremists could potentially hold power in a federal state for the first time since World War II, it was imperative for democratic voices to be heard loud and clear.
