China-Nepal floods: 261 foreigners missing in Tibet, online rumours targeted

Authorities in Tibet’s Gyirong county have released a detailed breakdown of foreign nationals missing following a catastrophic glacier collapse that triggered devastating floods across the China-Nepal border. According to official reports, 261 foreigners from 23 different nations remain unaccounted for, including 104 Nepalese citizens and 49 Indians. The list also includes dozens of individuals from Latvia, the United States, and Britain, along with smaller groups from Canada, Australia, South Africa, and various European and Asian countries.

The scale of the tragedy is immense, with China confirming 16 deaths so far while another 546 people are listed as missing within its borders. The situation is even more dire in neighboring Nepal, where officials report at least 788 confirmed fatalities and more than 2,500 people still missing. Satellite imagery captured in the wake of the disaster shows a stark contrast between previous landscapes and the current wreckage, illustrating how rivers surged through settlements and erased entire communities.

This Sunday marked the first time Beijing provided specific country by country data regarding the international victims involved in the crisis. Government representatives stated that they have already begun notifying the relevant diplomatic missions to coordinate search efforts and inform families back home. As rescue operations continue under difficult conditions, authorities are working to manage an influx of online rumors surrounding the event while focusing on locating survivors amidst the debris.
