Xbox CEO calls Project Helix a ‘family of devices’

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has clarified that the company’s mysterious next generation of hardware, known by the codename Project Helix, will be much more than a single new machine. While previous announcements suggested a traditional console successor, Sharma recently told BBC News that Helix is actually envisioned as a family of devices. This shift in language suggests Microsoft is moving away from a one size fits all approach toward a broader ecosystem of hardware tailored to different types of gamers.

This strategic pivot aligns with an existing multi year partnership between Microsoft and AMD focused on creating a diverse portfolio of devices. Adding to the intrigue are hints that Microsoft might open its doors to outside manufacturers. When questioned about whether other companies could produce their own versions of the hardware, Xbox VP Jason Ronald noted specifically that Project Helix would be available as a first party console, leaving the door open for third party alternatives to exist alongside it.

Beyond the variety of hardware, there are lingering questions regarding how users will access their games. While Sharma declined to specify if these new devices would lack disc drives, Microsoft coincidentally launched a program this week aimed at helping players digitize their physical game libraries. This move further signals a push toward a fully digital future for the platform, where software remains accessible across various pieces of gear regardless of the specific model owned.

As for when gamers can get their hands on these devices, patience will still be required. Although AMD indicated they could support a launch as early as 2027, internal timelines suggest development is still in its early stages. With reports indicating that Project Helix may not even hit its alpha phase until 2027 and capabilities including native PC game support, Microsoft appears to be taking its time to redefine what an Xbox actually is before bringing it to market.
