Oura pulls $15bn stock market listing days after announcement

Oura has abruptly scrapped its plans to launch a massive initial public offering on the US stock market, pulling back just days after announcing a move that would have valued the smart ring pioneer at 15 billion dollars. The Finnish founded company, which tracks everything from heartbeats to sleep patterns via its high end wearable devices, stated that it decided to postpone the flotation due to current uncertainties surrounding the IPO market. While Oura had initially aimed to raise up to 2.2 billion dollars by offering shares on the Nasdaq, the company now finds itself among a growing list of firms hesitant to enter an increasingly volatile financial climate.

Chief executive Tom Hale attempted to downplay the sudden retreat, suggesting that an IPO is merely one step in the company’s broader journey and emphasizing that they have the luxury of waiting for the right moment. However, industry analysts suggest a deeper trend is at play as several other major players, including nuclear technology firm Holtec International, have similarly delayed their listings. Experts point toward a perfect storm of rising energy costs, geopolitical instability, and persistent inflation that has shaken investor confidence and pushed US debt yields to levels not seen since 2007.

Despite the timing of the withdrawal, Oura appears to be in a strong financial position moving into this period of caution. Recent figures show significant growth, with pre tax income hitting 70 million dollars on sales of 1.2 billion dollars for the first nine months of this year alone. This follows a successful fiscal year where profits jumped substantially compared to previous periods, proving there is still plenty of appetite for their premium health tracking hardware despite a price tag often exceeding 300 dollars per ring.

Adding another layer of complexity to Oura’s corporate landscape is an ongoing class action lawsuit alleging false advertising regarding the accuracy of its sleep tracking capabilities. Lawyers for the plaintiffs argue that sleep occurs in the brain rather than on a finger and therefore cannot be measured by a ring. While Oura maintains terms that its scientific research is sound and insists that the legal battle played no role in delaying the stock market debut, the controversy looms as the company waits for more favorable winds before attempting once again to go public.
