More Americans are tapping investments to pay for spending, analysis finds

An increasing number of Americans are raiding their investment portfolios to cover daily expenses, signaling a growing dependence on the stock market for immediate liquidity. According to recent data from the JPMorganChase Institute, which analyzed over 20 million checking accounts, about 8.2 percent of individuals moved money from investments into their checking accounts during the three months ending in April. This represents a significant jump from just 4 percent in 2019 and a mere 2.4 percent back in 2015, suggesting that the line between long term savings and monthly spending is blurring.

Researchers believe this trend is fueled by a phenomenon known as the wealth effect, where rising stock prices make people feel richer and more comfortable spending. Following several years of strong gains in the S&P 500, many households have seen their equity holdings grow to represent nearly one third of their total assets. While high earners and retirees are leading this charge, the behavior has spread across almost every single age and income bracket. Even younger adults under 45 are increasingly treating their brokerage and retirement accounts as accessible funds rather than untouchable reserves.

This shift creates a tighter link between Wall Street performance and the broader American economy. Because consumers are using these funds for direct spending rather than letting them sit in checking accounts as liquid reserves, any major market downturn could trigger a sharper contraction in overall consumption. A separate study from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta warns that because consumer spending drives roughly two thirds of U.S. economic activity, a hypothetical steep drop in the stock market could lead to a noticeable decline in national spending levels.

Beyond market volatility, experts suggest that structural changes in how Americans save for old age are playing a role. The gradual disappearance of traditional company pensions in favor of defined contribution plans like 401ks means more people manage their own balances throughout their lives. As these accounts become central to household balance sheets, they are evolving from static retirement vehicles into active tools for managing current cash flow across all stages of life.
