iFixit has pulled back the curtain on the internal workings of Apple’s latest flagship devices, releasing a detailed teardown of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Through a combination of high resolution imagery and video analysis, the repair experts provided a rare glimpse into the engineering changes driving this generation. Among the most notable discoveries was a significant jump in power capacity for the Pro Max model, which now boasts a 5,567 mAh battery representing nearly a ten percent increase over its predecessor. The standard Pro model saw a much smaller bump to 4,288 mAh.
Beyond raw numbers, the teardown highlighted several sophisticated hardware upgrades designed to enhance performance and photography. Engineers found evidence of a new variable aperture system integrated into the camera arrays along with an expanded vapor chamber intended to keep the processor cool during heavy workloads. These additions suggest that Apple is leaning heavily into pro grade capabilities to justify the premium positioning of these handsets following their recent debut at the Surprise and Shine event.
However, not everything coming out of the lab was positive from a maintenance perspective. iFixit technicians noted that NAND flash storage is now embedded within a dual layer logic board, a design choice that complicates storage related repairs significantly. Even more concerning were reports regarding structural integrity; in three out of four units examined, the plastic frame surrounding the screen cracked or detached entirely during disassembly. While iFixit cautioned that more testing is required to determine if this is a widespread manufacturing flaw or an isolated incident, it marks a frustrating departure from previous iterations.
These findings come as consumers begin adjusting to an increasingly digital ecosystem, particularly in markets like North America and parts of Asia where eSIM only models are now standard. For users in other regions who still rely on physical SIM trays, while some specifications differ slightly, many of the core architectural shifts remain consistent across all global variants of these powerful new machines.
