Greek air force jet crashes at an annual aerial show, killing 2 pilots

A festive atmosphere turned into a scene of tragedy on Saturday when a Greek air force jet crashed during an annual aerial display north of Athens. The incident occurred at the Tanagra air force base during the Athens Flying Week event, where thousands of spectators had gathered to watch various maneuvers. According to officials, the twin seat Phantom F4 jet went down during a low altitude flight, resulting in the deaths of both pilots on board.

Witnesses described a terrifying sequence of events as video footage captured a thick plume of smoke rising from the initial point of impact, followed shortly by a secondary explosion as the aircraft broke apart. While the crash sparked intense fires that sent massive clouds of black smoke into the sky, emergency crews managed to keep the blaze away from the crowds. No injuries were reported among the attendees, though local authorities issued evacuation orders for areas immediately surrounding the base as eighty five firefighters and eleven water dropping aircraft worked to contain the flames.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed profound grief over the loss, stating that the accident serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent dangers faced by Greece’s aviators who stand ready to protect national airspace. In response to the disaster, organizers canceled all remaining scheduled events for the weekend and the air force has declared three days of official mourning. International condolences have already begun to pour in, including messages from Cyprus’ Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas, who reached out to his Greek counterpart to offer support during this period of national sorrow.
