AI Anxiety Triggers Global Tech Exodus as Investors Seek Refuge in Bonds

Investors shifted their gaze away from high flying semiconductor stocks on Thursday, sparking a global rotation toward safer havens like government bonds and traditional industries. This flight to quality came after a brutal streak for chipmakers, who saw their indices slide for the seventh consecutive session. While the Nasdaq managed to claw back early losses thanks to a rally in software stocks, the broader market felt the tremors of a deepening skepticism regarding the sustainability of the artificial intelligence boom.

The turmoil began in Asia, where major hubs for chip production saw dramatic crashes. South Korea’s Kospi plummeted so sharply that it triggered a circuit breaker, driven largely by double digit drops in giants like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Japan’s Nikkei similarly struggled, while even TSMC saw its shares dip despite reporting strong earnings. Market analysts suggest that a combination of rising borrowing costs and intensifying competition from China has left investors nervous about whether the massive capital expenditures required for AI infrastructure will actually pay off.

Adding fuel to the fire are reports of slowing revenue growth at key private players such as OpenAI and Anthropic, alongside warnings from research firms that many specialized AI cloud providers may go bust within the decade. With core inflation concerns keeping interest rates elevated, the cost of servicing the immense debt used to build data centers is becoming a primary worry for Wall Street. Some economists have compared current AI spending levels to the historic expansion of American railways in the nineteenth century, warning that any significant stall in this buildout could dampen overall economic growth projections.

Despite the volatility, some experts believe these corrections are necessary adjustments rather than signs of a total collapse. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day significantly higher, buoyed by healthcare and materials stocks as traders diversified their portfolios. While fear of a burst bubble continues to drive short term selling, several strategists maintain that long term demand remains robust enough to eventually justify current valuations once the immediate macroeconomic noise settles.
