U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee has issued a blistering condemnation following a violent assault on a Washington Post photojournalist in the West Bank. In a series of social media posts on Saturday, Huckabee described the attack on Heidi Levine as vicious, cowardly, and a despicable act of terror. He emphasized that Levine is an American citizen who had clearly identified herself as press, arguing that those responsible for targeting an unarmed reporter should spend years in prison while calling for immediate arrests and prosecutions.
The incident unfolded Friday during an olive harvest near the Palestinian village of Abu Falah. Video footage obtained by CBS News and the Foreign Press Association shows roughly 20 masked men in dark clothing descending from an Israeli settlement outpost into an olive grove. The recordings capture the moment Levine was surrounded, shoved to the ground, and beaten by the group, who then seized her camera equipment and personal belongings. Several Palestinians were also injured during the clash.
Levine, an award winning veteran of conflict reporting with over four decades of experience, remains hospitalized in Tel Aviv recovering from broken ribs and recent hand surgery. She recounted being pinned to the ground and assaulted for more than ten minutes despite wearing a helmet and a protective vest marked PRESS. Her passport and phone were among the items stolen during the ordeal.
While Israeli police and military officials have stated that investigations are underway, political reactions have been mixed. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned violence against any individual but notably referred to the event as alleged, suggesting that the specific circumstances surrounding the encounter remain unclear. For now, Ambassador Huckabee continues to push for accountability, labeling the ambush as a dishonorable act of senseless violence.
