This country has over 100,000 people age 100 or older for first time

Japan has officially entered uncharted demographic territory, becoming the first nation in history to record more than 100,000 citizens aged 100 or older. According to recent data from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, there were 107,677 centenarians as of September 1, representing a steady climb that has continued uninterrupted for fifty six years. While other nations like the United States have seen their own populations grow, Japan currently holds the global lead in sheer numbers of oldest-old citizens.

The vast majority of these centenarians are women, who outnumber men in this age bracket by nearly seven to one. Experts attribute this remarkable longevity to a combination of systemic advantages and lifestyle choices. Low obesity rates, affordable healthcare, and frequent medical screenings play a major role, but cultural habits are just as influential. A traditional diet rich in fish, vegetables, and rice combined with an active daily routine involving walking and cycling helps keep many seniors mobile well into their tenth decade.

However, this milestone brings significant societal pressures along with its celebrations. As more people reach extreme old age while birth rates continue to plummet, Japan is facing a tightening squeeze on its public resources and workforce. Health Minister Kenichiro Ueno expressed pride in his citizens’ vitality, yet officials acknowledge that sustaining the social security system will be an uphill battle given the shrinking pool of working-age adults available to provide care and funding.

Beyond the economics of elderly care, medical professionals are shifting their focus toward the concept of healthspan versus lifespan. Epidemiologists note that simply adding years to a life is less important than ensuring those extra years are spent in good health. For Japan, the challenge moving forward will be balancing the triumph of medical advancement with the practical reality of supporting a population that is aging faster than almost anywhere else on earth.
