Snap is launching a new Specs AI tool, and it’s coming to iOS and Mac

Snap is expanding its reach into the world of proactive productivity with the launch of Specs Intelligence, a new artificial intelligence assistant designed to act as an anticipatory service. Unlike traditional chatbots that simply react to prompts, Snap claims this tool learns a user’s goals, routines, and relationships by connecting to various digital accounts. By integrating with platforms like Gmail and Slack, the AI aims to manage immediate tasks so users can focus on long term objectives, effectively acting as a digital concierge that knows what you need before you even ask.

The rollout begins with a preview version currently available for iOS users, while those looking to bring the experience to their Mac computers can join a waitlist for full early access. While the software stands alone on mobile and desktop, it was developed specifically to complement Specs, Snap’s first foray into consumer augmented reality glasses. When paired with the hardware, the AI can project personal briefings or critical reminders directly into the wearer’s field of vision, creating a seamless blend of digital information and physical reality.

In practical terms, Specs Intelligence intends to eliminate the friction of planning and preparation. For example, it might flag key questions for an upcoming business meeting or consolidate flight and hotel details for a vacation while simultaneously warning the user about a looming work deadline during their trip. To power these capabilities, Snap utilizes a mix of locally hosted large language models and open source models based in the United States, which they iterate upon frequently to improve performance.

Of course, granting an AI such deep access to private emails and calendars raises significant privacy concerns. Snap has attempted to soothe these fears by stating that it cannot view personal content used within the system and promising that data from connected accounts will not be used for advertising or training its AI models. Despite these assurances, the company faces a steep climb in winning over skeptical users who may find the idea of an all seeing digital assistant more unnerving than helpful.
