The Math Problem Facing GE Aerospace’s Market Valuation

GE Aerospace currently finds itself trading at a significant premium compared to the broader market, with a price-to-earnings ratio of 34.0 against the S&P 500’s 23.0. This valuation suggests that investors are banking on aggressive growth within the company’s jet engine service division. However, maintaining this trajectory requires a delicate balancing act between two different generations of engine technology, leaving some analysts wondering if the current stock price assumes too much optimism.

The central tension lies in the transition from the older CFM56 engines to the newer LEAP models. While shop visits for the legacy CFM56 fleet have remained largely flat, activity for the LEAP engines is surging, showing a jump of roughly 40 percent in the third quarter of 2026. The problem is that these newer engines are still early in their lifecycles, meaning they require less intensive work per visit. According to management, a LEAP shop visit generates only about half the revenue of a CFM56 visit, effectively requiring GE to perform twice as many repairs just to maintain previous revenue levels.

Despite this hurdle, GE Aerospace continues to report strong fundamentals. Its Commercial Engines and Services segment remains the primary powerhouse of the organization, accounting for nearly 73 percent of total revenue in fiscal 2025 and contributing billions toward an increased operating profit guide for 2026. With a massive backlog exceeding 170 billion dollars and approximately 95 percent of revenue already locked in, the company possesses a substantial cushion against immediate volatility.

Looking ahead to 2027, all eyes are on whether this volume increase can offset lower per-visit margins. Company leadership anticipates low double digit growth for commercial services next year and expects engine removals from aircraft wings to increase further. While growth rates for LEAP visits may cool slightly from their recent peaks to around 25 or 26 percent, any deviation from these projections could rattle investor confidence when full guidance is released in January.
