Apple seeks developer input to unclutter Safari on foldable iPhone

Apple has officially acknowledged that Safari struggles to make the most of the iPhone Duo’s unique hardware, specifically regarding its smaller outer display. Since the device’s launch, critics and early adopters have pointed out that the browser’s right aligned controls consume far too much valuable screen real estate. This creates a cramped viewing experience where websites are squeezed into an awkwardly narrow column, often making the inner screen feel like the only viable option for serious browsing.

Jen Simmons recently addressed these concerns in a WebKit blog post detailing updates for Safari 27.1. She admitted that current limitations prevent websites from extending behind the interface controls, which leaves designers unable to utilize the full width of the glass. While simple technical fixes exist to stretch content across the entire screen, Apple is hesitant to implement them blindly, fearing that critical buttons or text could end up hidden beneath the browser’s own navigation elements.

Rather than rushing out a quick patch, Apple is taking a collaborative approach by inviting web developers to suggest more intuitive solutions. The goal is to find a foolproof method that allows for creative layouts, such as full width header backgrounds, without sacrificing usability. For now, owners of the iPhone Duo will have to deal with the tight margins while Apple investigates how to balance functional controls with a more open visual experience.
