President Emmanuel Macron has condemned a brutal shooting spree in the suburbs of Paris as a racist terrorist attack, calling the event a turning point for the French Republic. Over the course of fifteen minutes on Friday morning, a gunman opened fire from a grey Renault Clio, targeting pedestrians across Trappes and neighboring La Verriere. One person was killed and five others were wounded, including a twelve year old girl who remains in serious condition after sustaining eight gunshot wounds.
Local officials described a scene of calculated chaos as the assailant drove through neighborhoods, firing indiscriminately at people near a medical center, a petrol station, and a children’s playground. The Mayor of Trappes, Ali Rabeh, stated that the shooter seemed intent on causing maximum carnage by randomly attacking passersby. In a heartbreaking interview with broadcasters, the mother of the injured young girl questioned if her daughter’s headscarf made her a target, emphasizing that the child was born in France and deserved to live safely in her own home.
The suspect has been identified as thirty nine year old Kevin T, who was apprehended on a main road in La Verriere using what investigators believe to be an older semi automatic weapon dating back to World War Two. While he had four prior convictions that were automatically expunged from his record, authorities admitted he was not on any official intelligence watchlists nor considered a high level security threat prior to the massacre.
As investigations continue under the National Anti Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office, officials are exploring potential links to organized terrorist groups and have already detained another individual from the suspect’s immediate family circle. Visiting the site of the violence, President Macron urged citizens to stand firm against hateful ideologies taking root within society, insisting that victims were specifically chosen because of their religion or skin color.
