At Meta Connect, the company’s smart glasses were everywhere

Walking into this year’s Meta Connect, the first thing anyone noticed was that smart glasses weren’t just a featured product; they were practically the dress code. From company executives to visiting influencers, the frames seemed permanently attached to almost every face in the building. It became immediately clear that Mark Zuckerberg is betting heavily on wearable tech, shifting the focus of the annual event away from traditional headsets and toward sleek eyewear integrated with artificial intelligence.

Among the most intriguing reveals were new audio-only frames designed specifically to address lingering privacy concerns. After facing criticism over camera-equipped models being used for surreptitious recording, Meta developed a lightweight alternative featuring six microphones but no lens. These glasses prioritize communication and entertainment, allowing users to take calls or listen to music without earbuds. More impressively, they integrate with Muse, Meta’s agentic AI system. While testing the feature felt slightly awkward—the AI occasionally interrupted real-life conversations because it couldn’t tell when I was talking to it versus giving a command—the potential is undeniable. Being able to dictate emails or query historical facts while walking down the street brings a hands-free utility that feels like a genuine evolution of the smartphone experience.

Meta also showcased a deeply practical application for its hardware with a specialized set of glasses for the hearing impaired. Developed over five years, these devices aim to provide an affordable alternative to expensive medical hearing aids, which can cost thousands of dollars compared to the projected 150 dollar price point for these frames. During demonstrations, the technology successfully amplified voices using both focused and omnidirectional modes, offering a tangible benefit for millions of people dealing with hearing loss rather than just providing another novelty gadget for early adopters.

Despite the enthusiasm radiating throughout the venue, smart glasses have historically struggled to move beyond a niche market. By diversifying its lineup—ranging from productivity tools powered by AI assistants to essential accessibility devices—Meta is casting an intentionally wide net. Whether these efforts will finally push wearables into the mainstream remains to be seen, but inside the bubble of Connect, it felt as though the era of talking to your sunglasses had officially arrived.
