Meta gets to consumer AI device market before OpenAI, but Zuckerberg’s strategy remains unproven

Mark Zuckerberg is making a high stakes gamble to ensure Meta owns the physical gateways through which people access artificial intelligence. By unveiling a suite of new hardware at the recent Connect conference, including the Muse Charm pendant and an ambitious plan for over one hundred styles of AI glasses by 2026, Meta has managed to beat OpenAI to the punch in the consumer device race. This push comes as Zuckerberg attempts to distance his empire from its dependence on Apple, a relationship soured by privacy changes that crippled Meta’s advertising capabilities years ago.

At the heart of this strategy is Muse, an AI agent designed to handle complex tasks like booking travel and managing emails. While Meta arrived late to the generative AI party compared to giants like Google and OpenAI, investors seem optimistic about this pivot toward integrated hardware. Meta’s stock climbed significantly following these announcements, suggesting that Wall Street believes Zuckerberg has finally found a viable path forward after several years of struggling to find a mass market for his vision of the metaverse.

However, the practical utility of these devices remains a point of contention among industry observers. The Muse Charm, described as something between a digital pet keychain and a medical buzzer, faces a steep climb in convincing users why they need another gadget to charge when smartphones already dominate every aspect of daily life. Critics argue that unless interacting with a pendant is substantially easier than pulling out a phone, it risks becoming a novelty rather than a necessity.

Beyond the hardware hurdles, Zuckerberg must solve a difficult economic puzzle regarding how Muse will actually make money. He envisions taking small transaction fees when the AI shops on behalf of users, but major players like Amazon have already moved to block such automation on their sites. To succeed, Meta will need to convince retailers that their AI agent drives new sales rather than simply diverting existing customers through a paid middleman. For now, Meta holds the early lead in delivery, but whether consumers actually want these gadgets remains an open question.
