AfD scores landslide regional victory but falls short of majority

The Alternative for Germany party has secured a commanding lead in the Saxony Anhalt regional elections, marking a historic surge for the far right in eastern Germany. Final results show the AfD capturing 43.8 percent of the vote, more than doubling its performance from five years ago. Despite this landslide momentum, the party fell just short of an outright majority, landing three seats shy of control with 39 representatives in the 83 member parliament. This outcome represents a devastating blow to Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his center right CDU, which plummeted to a dismal 17.2 percent after leading the state for nearly a quarter century.

Celebrating the result as a turning point in German politics, AfD gubernatorial candidate Ulrich Siegmund claimed his party has written history and holds a clear mandate to govern. Speaking to public broadcaster ARD, Siegmund argued that voters have sent an unmistakable signal that current policies are unsustainable, even suggesting that Merz himself acted as an effective campaigner for the AfD through his own unpopularity. High voter turnout of nearly 78 percent suggests the party successfully mobilized previously disengaged citizens who are frustrated by a sluggish national economy and existing migration policies.

If they manage to navigate the complex coalition process, taking power in Saxony Anhalt would be the greatest achievement in the AfDs thirteen year existence. While others may attempt to form a minority government to keep them out, Siegmund has already signaled he will not play games regarding leadership. His proposed agenda focuses heavily on internal security and cultural shifts, including a deportation offensive against migrants and pushing for legal homeschooling. He also intends to target regional public broadcasting networks over alleged disinformation and ban rainbow flags from schools in favor of national symbols.

Despite these ambitions, the victory arrives under heavy scrutiny from Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, which classifies several branches of the party as proven right wing extremists due to their rhetoric regarding immigration and ties to Russia. The AfDs platform includes calls to lift sanctions on Moscow and end financial aid to Ukraine, though such foreign policy moves remain beyond state jurisdiction. For now, while Saxony Anhalts relative size limits its overall impact on national legislation, the scale of this shift signals a profound transformation of the political landscape across eastern Germany.
