ROYAL OAK, Mich. — Bonnie Swetman is a big fan of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. She read his book about the coronavirus pandemic and has excitedly followed his presidential campaign and his status as an outspoken vaccine skeptic.

But as Swetman, 72, stood near the merchandise table at a comedy show fundraiser for Kennedy’s independent campaign here earlier this month, she pointed at a sign with a curious look. Who was Shanahan, the name beneath Kennedy’s?
