Ukraine war live: Poland scrambles jets as Putin attacks Kyiv with jet-powered drones

Tensions along the eastern flank of NATO reached a fever pitch early Tuesday morning as Poland scrambled fighter jets in response to a wave of Russian jet powered drones targeting Ukraine. The aerial assault forced Ukrainian authorities to issue urgent shelter warnings across the entire country, but the danger quickly extended beyond Ukrainian borders. In a significant escalation, a NATO fighter jet intercepted and shot down a drone in southern Lithuania near the village of Pratkunai, shortly after alerts had been triggered in the capital city of Vilnius.

While the chaos unfolded in the skies, Kyiv suffered direct hits on critical civilian infrastructure. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that Russian drones struck a petrol station and various warehouse facilities throughout the capital. This expansion of targets follows reports that hundreds of fuel stations across Ukraine have been targeted in recent months. The violence also claimed victims among those attempting to help others; animal rescuers in Kramatorsk were severely injured during a separate drone strike while attempting to save dogs from a war zone.

Amidst these attacks, President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed a cautious openness to a U S led proposal for a ceasefire specifically designed to protect energy sites. While describing such an agreement as a potential first step toward de escalation, Zelensky insisted that Ukraine would only move forward if Washington could guarantee that Moscow was genuinely committed to ending the conflict rather than using the pause as a tactical maneuver.

Adding further geopolitical complexity, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his unwavering support for Vladimir Putin in a message celebrating North Korea’s founding anniversary. Kim vowed to deepen comprehensive cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow, framing Russia’s invasion as a sacred war for international justice. These diplomatic overtures coincide with reports of North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces, signaling an increasingly tight military alliance that continues to alarm Western observers as the war spills over traditional boundaries.
