The British government is standing firm on its decision to impose strict new sanctions on Israeli settlement goods despite a sharp diplomatic escalation that includes an order for London to shut down its consulate in east Jerusalem within thirty days. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced the measures on Tuesday, confirming a ban on imports from West Bank settlements and declaring that the United Kingdom views the ongoing occupation of those territories as unlawful. This move marks a significant shift in policy, extending beyond trade bans to include sanctions on individuals and companies facilitating settlement growth and broadening an existing arms export ban.
Israel has reacted with fierce condemnation, accusing the British government of systematically working against its interests. In addition to the demand for the consulate’s closure, Israel has banned twelve British lawmakers from entering the country. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar dismissed claims regarding ethnic cleansing in the West Bank as outrageous lies, warning that governments attempting to harm Israel would find themselves losing influence and relevance across the region.
In an interview with the BBC, Miliband defended the decision by stating that Britain could not remain passive while a future two state solution was being dismantled. He argued that waiting any longer would have made such a peace framework impossible to uphold and emphasized that the UK could not stay silent while Palestinians faced intimidation and harassment by settler terrorists. While France and Canada have joined Britain in imposing similar sanctions, the move has created friction with some officials in Washington. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that while his administration shares the goal of regional stability, they will not follow suit with similar sanctions. Expressing concern that such moves could destabilize an already tenuous situation in the West Bank and hinder progress toward peace plans for Gaza, Rubio indicated that although the White House was notified in advance, American policy remains distinct from London’s current approach.
