Trump Made More Stock Trades Than Congress Combined While Pushing a Trading Ban

New data reveals a striking contradiction at the heart of current efforts to curb insider trading in Washington. According to a review of financial disclosures conducted by Bloomberg, Donald Trump executed nearly 28,700 stock trades over a period of seventeen months. This staggering volume exceeds the total number of trades made by every single member of Congress combined during the same window, which totaled roughly 22,200 transactions.

This revelation comes as House Republicans push forward with legislation designed to bar lawmakers and their families from trading individual stocks. While Trump has publicly championed the bill, calling for its passage without delay during his State of the Union address, the proposed law contains a glaring omission because it does not apply to the presidency. When Senator Josh Hawley suggested expanding these restrictions to include the executive branch last year, Trump dismissed him as a pawn.

The White House maintains that these holdings are managed by third party firms using index tracking models and claims that neither Trump nor his family directs specific trades. However, critics point to instances where timing seemed overly convenient, such as holding a stake in DoorDash shortly before hosting a White House event focused on deliveries. When questioned about potential conflicts of interest regarding these gains, Trump simply argued that everyone is profiting because the overall stock market is rising.

Public sentiment remains firmly in favor of stricter rules, with recent polling showing that three quarters of Americans want elected officials banned from trading stocks entirely. Despite this overwhelming support, enforcement remains weak. Current penalties under existing laws can be as low as two hundred dollars, and legal scholars suggest that prosecuting a sitting president for such activities would present significant hurdles for the Department of Justice.
