These Gen Z-approved investment funds are having a moment—what investors should know

For decades, the golden rule of investing has been simple: do not put all your eggs in one basket. Traditional wisdom suggests that spreading assets across various companies and sectors protects a person from total financial ruin if a single giant falls. However, a new wave of investors, led primarily by Gen Z, is rethinking how to balance safety with growth. They are increasingly turning to thematic exchange traded funds, which allow them to bet heavily on specific trends like artificial intelligence, space exploration, or green energy rather than sticking solely to broad market indexes.

These specialized funds act as a high octane supplement to a standard portfolio. According to Todd Rosenbluth of TMX VettaFi, these tools allow investors to essentially double click on an industry they believe in. While many experienced traders stepped back from themed ETFs between 2022 and 2024, there has been a massive resurgence recently, with billions of dollars flowing back into the market. Artificial intelligence remains the primary driver of this comeback, reflecting a deep confidence among young adults in the long term viability of AI technologies.

Gen Z is particularly drawn to these instruments because they grew up in an era where traditional mutual funds feel outdated compared to the flexibility of ETFs. Because younger investors typically have more time before retirement, they are often more comfortable absorbing higher risks for the potential of higher rewards. For them, investing isn’t just about preservation but about aligning their money with the future trajectories of global innovation.

Experts warn, however, that chasing hot trends requires a strategic approach. To avoid overexposure, analysts suggest diversifying themes so that a slump in tech doesn’t wipe out an entire account. There is also a caution against redundancy; if someone already owns an S&P 500 index fund, buying a thematic ETF that simply holds more Apple or Microsoft shares provides little actual benefit. Instead, the real value lies in finding funds that introduce smaller, up and coming companies that aren’t yet household names.

Ultimately, success in thematic investing comes down to due diligence. Beyond picking an exciting topic like robotics or infrastructure, investors are encouraged to scrutinize the providers themselves. Checking fee structures and determining whether a fund is actively or passively managed can mean the difference between steady growth and eroded profits. By combining these targeted bets with old school diversification and rigorous research, New Age investors hope to capture lightning in a bottle without risking everything on a single spark.
