Tech Slump Drags Markets Down Despite Early Friday Gains

Wall Street is attempting a modest recovery on Friday morning, though small gains in futures suggest the broader market is still bracing for a negative weekly finish. While S&P 500 and Dow Jones futures ticked upward before the opening bell, the mood remains cautious. A significant downturn in technology and artificial intelligence sectors has left the S&P 500 down roughly 0.9 percent for the week, with the Nasdaq suffering a steeper decline of 2.4 percent.

Much of this volatility stems from chipmakers struggling against geopolitical tensions and competition from China. The semiconductor sector has taken a visible hit, dragging down major players like Micron and AMD. Some analysts believe these fears are heightened because much of the current AI boom is occurring within private markets. There is hope that once industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic eventually go public, providing clearer metrics and analyst coverage, some of the uncertainty currently plaguing public tech stocks will dissipate.

Adding to the tension is a backdrop of stubborn inflation and global instability. Investors are wrestling with wholesale inflation figures that reached their highest levels since 2022, fueled largely by rising energy costs resulting from conflict between the U.S. and Iran. While Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh recently refrained from hinting at further rate hikes during an appearance in Bangkok, many traders interpreted his silence as a signal that policymakers may keep interest rates steady through late October.

Despite the general gloom in tech, individual stories provided bright spots during premarket trading. Tesla shares surged after the unveiling of a futuristic second-generation Roadster featuring rocket-style thrusters developed by SpaceX, although buyers will have to wait until 2028 for production to start. Meanwhile, Berkshire Hathaway continues to diversify its portfolio under CEO Greg Abel, seeing substantial returns on a recent strategic pivot into Italian private equity firm Bending Spoons.
