Surging yields and big bond losses may offer sizable tax savings opportunity to investors right now

While the recent plunge in bond prices has left many investors feeling bruised, financial experts suggest that the current market turmoil actually presents a strategic window for tax relief. With 10 year treasury yields hovering around 5 percent, many who invested in bond mutual funds or ETFs during periods of lower yields are now facing significant unrealized losses. While most people treat tax loss harvesting as a frantic end of year ritual in December, analysts warn that waiting too long could be a mistake because these losses might evaporate if the market rebounds before January.

The timing is particularly advantageous because of the stark contrast between different asset classes. While popular bond trackers like the Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund and the iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF have seen declines, the stock market has remained remarkably resilient. This divergence means that for many portfolios, the bond side is currently the only area where losses exist to offset massive gains found in equity holdings like the S&P 500. By selling these losing bond positions now, investors can create a tax asset while simultaneously repositioning their money into new bonds that offer much higher yields than those available a few years ago.

However, professionals caution against simply glancing at a fund’s current price to determine if a sale makes sense. Determining an actual tax loss requires a deep dive into the cost basis, which includes the original purchase price plus any commissions or reinvested dividends. Because many investors buy shares incrementally over several years, they may hold multiple tax lots within a single fund. Even if a total holding appears profitable on paper, specific batches of shares bought at certain times may still be underwater and eligible for harvesting.

To maximize this opportunity, advisors recommend moving beyond general account balances and examining granular transaction data. Instead of liquidating an entire position and losing desired market exposure, savvy investors can cherry pick specific lots that carry losses while keeping their winning positions intact. Whether switching to a different fund with varied credit quality or simply resetting their entry point for better future income, investors are encouraged to act while conditions remain favorable rather than following the traditional calendar approach to taxes.
