Stock Market Live Updates Today: Markets fall amid Middle East tensions; Sensex slips 600 points, Nifty below 23,850

Indian equity markets faced a bruising session on Wednesday as geopolitical instability in the Middle East triggered a widespread selloff. The BSE Sensex plummeted roughly 600 points, while the Nifty 50 slipped below the critical 23,850 mark shortly after the opening bell. This downward trend mirrored a broader collapse across Asian markets, fueled primarily by escalating tensions between the United States and Iran that have sent Brent crude prices soaring toward 97 dollars a barrel.

The surge in oil prices has sparked immediate concern among investors regarding renewed inflation pressures and the likelihood of higher global interest rates. These anxieties manifested in a steep climb for government bond yields worldwide, with the US 10 year Treasury yield nearing a three year high. Such macroeconomic headwinds created a risk averse atmosphere that hammered tech giants in South Korea and dragged down indices from Tokyo to Sydney, leaving Indian traders grappling with significant volatility.

Despite the overarching gloom, there were isolated pockets of resilience within the domestic market. Adani Ports emerged as one of the few bright spots, leading gains along with companies like Coal India and Sun Pharma, which managed to trade in the green during early sessions. However, these modest wins were overshadowed by broad based selling across other sectors and a particularly disappointing debut for Annu Projects, whose shares plunged over 27 percent upon listing well below their initial public offering price.

As the day progressed, the narrative remained dominated by external shocks rather than internal fundamentals. Analysts noted that emerging markets are particularly vulnerable to this combination of spiking energy costs and rising borrowing costs. With global sentiment remaining fragile and eyes fixed on the unfolding conflict in the Middle East, market participants continue to brace for further fluctuations in both equity and currency markets.
