Stock futures are little changed ahead of pivotal Fed rate decision: Live updates

Wall Street is holding its breath as U.S. equity futures remained largely flat Tuesday evening, reflecting a cautious mood among investors awaiting a critical interest rate decision from the Federal Reserve. Markets are currently bracing for what could be the start of a new hiking cycle, with traders pricing in a ninety two percent probability of a quarter point increase on Wednesday. This move would push the current target range beyond its existing three point five to three point seven five percent window, signaling a tighter monetary environment for the coming months.

The anticipation comes amid significant tension between policymakers and the executive branch. Christopher Phelan, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, recently suggested that raising rates now would be a mistake, arguing that inflation data has been moving in the right direction. While August’s twelve month consumer price index cooled to three point four percent from a May peak of four point two percent, core inflation remains stubbornly high, edging up more than analysts had expected last month.

Adding to the volatility, global markets are grappling with heightened geopolitical instability and shifting economic signals abroad. Crude oil prices surged Tuesday following reports of drone attacks on Saudi Arabian pipelines, sending West Texas Intermediate climbing over four percent to top one hundred dollars per barrel. Meanwhile, across the Pacific, Asian markets showed mixed results as investors weighed these energy spikes against expectations that the Bank of Japan may soon raise its own rates to combat domestic inflationary pressures fueled by rising energy costs.

The ripple effects of this uncertainty are already being felt in several sectors of the American economy. Treasury yields have spiked, pushing the ten year yield above five percent and driving thirty year fixed mortgage rates to their highest levels since early twenty twenty five. At the same time, tech stocks faced downward pressure Tuesday after discussions regarding a potential slowdown in AI product releases left shareholders uneasy about the immediate trajectory of growth in semiconductors and cloud services.
