Sony brings back its fan-favorite headphones, the XM4

Sony is taking a nostalgic turn in its audio lineup by reviving one of its most celebrated products. The company recently announced the return of the WH-1000XM4 headphones under a new designation, the WH-1000XM4C. Originally released in 2020, the XM4s became legendary for their balance of sound quality and portability, specifically their ability to fold into a compact shape—a feature that disappeared with the subsequent XM5 model. While the hardware remains largely identical to the original version, including the older QN1 processing chip and four-microphone array, Sony has added a fresh lavender color option to attract new buyers.

Under the hood, these revived headphones aren’t exact clones. Sony updated the sound profile to match contemporary standards and expanded the equalizer settings from five bands to ten within the companion app, adding a specialized gaming preset for those who want more precision. Connectivity has also seen a bump with the inclusion of Bluetooth 6. Interestingly, however, battery life has taken a slight dip; whereas the originals offered 30 hours of playback with active noise canceling enabled, the new XM4C provides about 27 hours.

Launching later this fall for 300 dollars, the XM4C sits at a curious price point. It is fifty dollars cheaper than its predecessor’s launch price and significantly less than today’s flagship XM6, yet it arrives at a time when newer models often undercut old ones through discounts. This move raises questions about whether consumers really need a throwback device when superior technology exists in higher tiers. Still, for users who prioritize that specific folding design over cutting edge noise cancellation specs, this relaunch offers a familiar comfort.

Beyond the high end revival, Sony is refreshing its budget friendly options with new versions of the WH-CH730N and WH-CH530 lines. These entry level headsets inherit the same improved equalizer and gaming presets as their pricier sibling and boast impressive battery lives reaching up to 55 hours on certain models. To round out these announcements, Sony is leaning into pop culture with limited edition Hello Kitty bundles featuring branded pouches and bags across several different headphone ranges throughout late this year.
