Schmidt Sciences Will Invest $20 Million In Eight New Polymaths

Schmidt Sciences is doubling down on its bet that the next great scientific breakthroughs happen when experts step outside their comfort zones. The organization, founded by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and his wife Wendy, recently announced a 20 million dollar investment to support eight new Schmidt Polymaths. These selected researchers aren’t just specialists in one field but are recognized for their ability to bridge different disciplines to solve complex problems. Each recipient will receive up to 2.5 million dollars over five years, providing a rare level of financial flexibility that allows them to pursue high risk ideas often ignored by traditional grant processes.

This latest group joins a growing community of scholars tasked with tackling some of the most pressing mysteries of the modern world. Their projects cover a staggering breadth of inquiry, ranging from Zohreh Davoudi using quantum sensing to probe the evolution of the universe to Hernan Garcia employing gene editing to build crops capable of surviving a changing climate. Other initiatives include Blake Richards training AI models on human behavior to unlock secrets of cognition and Allon Klein studying invertebrate immune systems to find new medical treatments for people.

According to James Ricci, a director at Schmidt Sciences, these awards provide the necessary runway for researchers who have already proven their originality to take a leap into entirely unfamiliar territory. This philosophy has paid off in previous cohorts, which produced everything from molecular computers powered by heat to discoveries about urban diets through wastewater DNA analysis. By prioritizing versatility and ambition over narrow specialization, the program aims to accelerate progress across critical sectors like biosciences, astrophysics, and artificial intelligence.

To earn a spot in this elite circle, candidates must be nominated by universities globally and demonstrate a track record that spans multiple areas of expertise while having reached tenure or a similar career milestone within the last three years. From Grace X. Gu combining food science with manufacturing for personalized nutrition to Lauren Zarzar exploring chemical reactions in microscopic spaces, these eight individuals represent a strategic effort to foster intellectual curiosity without boundaries. Through this initiative, Schmidt Sciences hopes that giving brilliant minds the freedom to wander will eventually lead them toward transformative discoveries.
