Saudi Arabian oil pipeline system hit by projectiles triggering fires

Saudi Arabia’s critical oil infrastructure came under attack on Thursday as projectiles struck a key pipeline system, sparking several fires across the landscape. According to U.S. officials familiar with the situation, the strikes targeted pump stations situated alongside the pipeline rather than the line itself. Satellite imagery captured in the aftermath reveals significant fire damage at one facility, while separate images from Thursday show thick plumes of black smoke rising from another location. While official confirmation is still pending, some sources indicate that drones originating from Iraq were likely used in the assault.

The timing of these attacks adds immense pressure to an already volatile global energy market, with oil prices recently surging past 100 dollars a barrel due to regional instability. This latest breach occurs shortly after Iranian aligned militias seized a strategic port city in Yemen, further complicating energy shipping routes in the Red Sea. For Saudi Arabia, this pipeline has become a vital lifeline since the onset of conflict between the United States and Iran, allowing the kingdom to bypass the Strait of Hormuz by routing roughly five million barrels of oil per day toward the port of Yanbu instead.

Security analysts suggest that these strikes are part of a broader Iranian strategy to utilize proxy militias in Iraq and Yemen to gain leverage over Arab nations and challenge American influence in the region. These fears mirror warnings previously shared by Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman during high level meetings in Washington earlier this summer regarding potential escalations via proxy groups like the Houthis. Adding to the crisis, Saudi Arabia recently informed OPEC that its crude oil production has plummeted to its lowest levels since 1990.

While neither the Saudi government nor Aramco have responded to requests for comment, U.S. officials continue to gather intelligence on the scale of the destruction. Experts note that repairing damaged pump stations is generally less complex than fixing structural breaches in a main pipeline, but there remains deep concern over whether Houthi fighters will now target shipments exiting through Bab al Mandeb. For now, US Central Command has declined to comment officially on the incident as investigators work to determine exactly how much output was affected by the blaze.
