Despite the severity of the breach, Riyadh announced it will refrain from immediate retaliation following a direct request from Baghdad. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is granting the Iraqi government an opportunity to take necessary steps to prevent further attacks originating from its soil. While expressing support for these diplomatic efforts, the Kingdom maintained that it reserves the right to take any action required to protect its sovereignty and secure its vital infrastructure.
The Iraqi government moved quickly to distance itself from the incident, condemning the aggression and affirming its commitment to maintaining stable relations with its neighbor. In a swift internal reaction, Prime Minister Ali al Zaidi dismissed a military commander responsible for operations in Maysan province after investigators determined the drones were launched from within that region. Additionally, an investigative council has been formed to probe failures within the Maysan Operations Command to determine how such an operation was permitted to occur.
Regional tensions remain high as Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi described the event as a dangerous escalation and a blatant violation of international law. This attack comes amidst broader instability in the region, including recent movements by Yemen’s Houthi rebels who have tightened their grip on shipping corridors along the Red Sea coast.
