Rescue of Nepal hydropower workers ‘triumph for humans and humanity’, tunnelling expert says

In a moment of profound relief amidst widespread devastation, two workers have been pulled alive from a flooded hydropower tunnel in Nepal nine days after catastrophic flash floods tore through the region. Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharajan were rescued from the Trishuli 3A hydropower project following a glacial collapse that unleashed a torrent of mud and debris across the border between Nepal and China. For Arnold Dix, an Australian engineer and geologist brought in to advise on the operation, the survival of these two men serves as a critical psychological victory for teams battling exhaustion and despair.

The path to the rescue was fraught with immense technical challenges, starting with the simple difficulty of locating the facility among ruins. Once identified, rescuers encountered boulders the size of vehicles that required the risky use of explosives to clear. Upon reaching the tunnel, they discovered it was completely submerged, necessitating the digging of an emergency trench to drain the water. The tension broke Friday morning when responders heard a faint voice coming from fifty meters deep into the tunnel. After being told not to panic, the survivor simply replied ok, leading to what Dix describes as one of the great rescues of the twenty first century and a true triumph for humanity.

Despite this success, the scale of the tragedy remains staggering. While over two hundred and seventy people have been saved from various sites, official reports indicate at least twelve hundred dead and five thousand still missing across dozens of damaged hydropower projects. Unlike previous disasters where Dix focused on a single site, he notes that this crisis involves nearly thirty concurrent disaster zones, making it unlike anything he has ever faced in his career.

The mission is far from over as crews continue to push toward a high point in the eleven story power station known as the Goldilocks zone, where forty more workers are believed to be trapped. The danger remains acute for both survivors and rescuers; breaking through rock could trigger sudden flooding that may drown anyone caught in the shaft. To support these perilous efforts, Australia has deployed disaster response specialists and drone experts to assist Nepali authorities in their race against time to find more survivors buried beneath the mountain rubble.
