Rescue efforts intensify after Nepal-Tibet flooding as deaths climb past 900

Rescue operations have intensified across Nepal and Tibet as death tolls from catastrophic flooding climb past 900, leaving thousands more missing in one of the region’s worst disasters. The devastation began when a massive glacial collapse high in the Himalayas triggered a surge of rock and meltwater, creating a torrent that wiped out buildings and bridges. The scale of the tragedy is immense, with Nepal reporting 903 deaths and over 4,200 people still missing, while Chinese authorities have confirmed 16 deaths and hundreds more unaccounted for.

Much of the current rescue focus is centered on at least a dozen hydroelectric plant sites where workers remain trapped. In regions like Rasuwa and Nuwakot, rescuers are racing against time to reach laborers stuck inside massive diversion tunnels designed to channel water for power generation. While these concrete structures may provide temporary shelter and pockets of oxygen, experts warn that food and water are running dangerously low for those remaining underground. At the Upper Trishuli-1 project alone, hundreds are feared trapped beneath the earth as international teams join local forces to navigate the debris.

The chaos extends beyond industrial sites to pilgrims and travelers caught in the sudden deluge. One harrowing account involves a group of nearly fifty Indian devotees returning from Mount Kailash who vanished while waiting at a Chinese immigration complex near the border. Families continue to scour morgues and makeshift shelters for news, relying on grainy surveillance footage showing terrified crowds scrambling to escape walls of rushing water. For many parents and spouses, the silence remains agonizing as they wait for any sign that their loved ones survived the onslaught.

Logistical hurdles continue to hamper relief efforts on both sides of the border. In Tibet, Chinese crews are working frantically to repair critical roadways leading to Gyirong Port, which have been submerged under several meters of water. Meanwhile, in devastated towns like Dhading, surviving workers shoveling mud from ruined power stations expressed hope that future infrastructure will be moved further away from volatile riverbanks. As rain continues to fall across the mountains, the mission has shifted from immediate evacuation to a grueling search for survivors buried under layers of silt and stone.
