PNOE’s new face mask wants to make lab-grade breath testing a self-serve affair

At first glance, the latest device from PNOE looks like something plucked straight from a comic book, bearing a striking resemblance to the mask worn by Batman’s nemesis, Bane. However, the purpose of this gear is far less menacing. By measuring oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide exhalation, the mask provides detailed data that helps users optimize their diet and training routines with the ultimate goal of extending their lifespan. While previous versions of the technology required a trained technician to operate, the upcoming PNOE 2.0 aims to turn lab grade breath testing into a self serve experience.

According to CEO Apostolos Atsalakis, the shift toward autonomy means a user can simply walk into a gym, put on the mask, push a button and breathe for eight minutes to receive an analysis. This move removes the barrier of needing specialized staff, potentially opening doors for the device to appear in local pharmacies and fitness centers across the globe. The underlying science of metabolic testing is nearly a century old and remains the gold standard for measuring VO2 max, but until now, it has mostly been reserved for elite athletes and those with access to expensive hospital equipment.

The new iteration focuses on accessibility and efficiency, capturing twenty three different biomarkers including resting metabolic rate and metabolic flexibility. These metrics allow users to understand exactly how many calories they need or how effectively their bodies switch between burning fats and carbohydrates. Because VO2 max has become a primary metric for longevity enthusiasts seeking to reduce mortality risks, PNOE views its data as a critical scorecard for the modern wellness movement. To ensure hygiene in shared environments like gyms, the electronic components detach from disposable or personal silicone masks.

Despite its sophisticated capabilities, PNOE positions itself strictly as a wellness tool rather than a medical device. It is not FDA cleared and does not provide prescriptions or medical diagnoses, though Atsalakis suggests that future data collection could eventually help flag serious health issues like cancer once regulatory hurdles are cleared. Currently operating as a business to business model, PNOE offers its tech via subscriptions to high end clients like Equinox and various NBA teams. By filling the gap between basic smartwatch estimates and full clinical workups, the company hopes to democratize deep physiological insights for anyone looking to live longer.
