Nvidia is shifting its strategy regarding the rollout of its controversial DLSS 5 AI rendering technology after community modders proved the software could run on hardware far older than the company initially intended. While the feature was originally slated exclusively for the new RTX 50 series GPUs, Nvidia spokesperson Rajal Maharaj confirmed that official support will eventually expand to include RTX 40 series cards once performance tuning for the newest generation is complete. This move comes as a nod to a gaming community that had already begun porting leaked versions of the tool to various legacy systems, though users with RTX 30 or 20 series cards may be left out in the cold for now.
Despite opening up access to older hardware, Nvidia remains firm on limiting how much power players actually have over the technology. In a direct contrast to the highly customizable sliders found in unofficial mods, the official release will be limited to a simple on or off toggle for most gamers. The company explained that granular controls involving structure intensity and custom masking are reserved strictly for developers to protect their original artistic vision. However, there is a glimmer of hope for enthusiasts, as Nvidia noted that individual game developers could choose to expose some of these deeper settings within their own in-game menus if they wish.
From a technical standpoint, DLSS 5 represents a significant leap in automation by using semantic AI masking. Instead of requiring manual labeling from developers, the system can independently recognize and distinguish between textures like foliage, skin, and glass to apply tailored neural lighting adjustments. Because these models process every single frame individually, there is no minimum framerate required for the tech to function effectively. To streamline adoption, Nvidia has provided SDKs and a native Unreal Engine 5 plugin to make integration easier for studios across the industry.
Yet, not everything is seamless in Nvidia’s transition. There are lingering questions about whether high profile publishers are still onboard following early backlash against the technology. When pressed on whether previously announced titles like Starfield or Assassin’s Creed Shadows would still receive the update, Nvidia avoided confirming any specific names. Instead, the company offered a vague assurance that many developers are still actively integrating the tools and that further updates will be shared as partnerships are finalized.
