Nine Israelis Detained As Turkey Targets Global Investment-fraud Network

Turkish authorities have carried out a massive crackdown on what they describe as a sophisticated global investment fraud ring, resulting in the detention of nine Israeli citizens. This wide sweeping operation targeted a network dubbed Scam Empire, which prosecutors allege defrauded victims across Europe, Asia, and Africa of at least 266 million dollars. The raids spanned hundreds of locations throughout Istanbul and the province of Mugla, conducted in coordination with Interpol and Turkey’s own national intelligence agency.

The alleged scheme relied on a vast infrastructure involving 42 different call centers and dozens of shell companies. Multilingual employees were hired to lure unsuspecting investors using fake trading platforms that displayed manufactured profits and inflated account balances to encourage larger deposits. Once the money was secured, investigators say the funds were laundered through various foreign bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets. Individual losses varied wildly, with some victims losing ten thousand dollars while others lost several hundred thousand.

To maintain secrecy and evade detection, the organization implemented strict internal protocols. New recruits were given false identities and fictitious academic credentials from prestigious universities to build trust with their marks. According to Turkish officials, those hired underwent polygraph tests to ensure they weren’t undercover agents, and speaking Hebrew was strictly forbidden within the office walls. Interestingly, the group specifically avoided targeting other Israeli citizens during their outreach efforts.

Israeli officials have acknowledged the arrests through the Foreign Ministry, stating that they are monitoring the situation closely to ensure all legal rights are respected for their citizens currently in custody. Authorities believe that many members of the syndicate migrated their operations from Israel to Turkey specifically to lower their profile and avoid scrutiny from home regulators. Among those detained is one suspected lead organizer who reportedly holds dual citizenship with Portugal.
