Michael Burry Buys Put Options on Nvidia, Micron, and Palantir as “The Big Short” Investor Predicts a 1987-Style Market Crash

Michael Burry is making headlines once again by betting against some of the biggest names in the artificial intelligence boom. The investor famously known for predicting the 2008 housing collapse has taken short positions through put options on Nvidia, Micron Technology, and Palantir. Burry appears convinced that the current enthusiasm surrounding AI is creating a dangerous bubble, drawing parallels to the dramatic market crash of 1987. He argues that excessive leverage among growth investors and a crowded trade are pushing indices to unsustainable heights, suggesting a correction could arrive sooner rather than later.

His specific concerns center on the cyclical nature of the hardware industry. Regarding Micron and Nvidia, Burry worries that the rapid pace of spending on chips and data centers mirrors the dot com era. He believes that if GPU technology depreciates faster than accounting books suggest, or if global supply eventually catches up with demand, it could trigger a sharp downward spiral in valuations. As for Palantir, Burry leans into a classic bear argument, claiming the company functions more like a traditional consulting firm than a scalable software services business.

However, critics argue that comparing today’s landscape to previous bubbles is an apples to oranges comparison. Unlike the hollow promises of many late nineties startups, companies like Nvidia and Palantir are generating massive revenues from actual demand. Furthermore, the primary funders of this AI infrastructure include giants like Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon, all of whom possess deep pockets and consistent profitability to sustain their investments regardless of short term volatility.

There is also a growing conversation regarding Burry’s motives for publicized warnings. Since launching his paid newsletter under the moniker Cassandra Unchained, some observers suggest that maintaining a persona as least prophetic doom-bringer creates its own financial incentive through subscriptions. Given that Burry has spent much of the last decade being early or wrong on several market timing calls, analysts suggest that investors treat his predictions with caution and rely on their own due diligence rather than following his every move.
