Miami Sheriff Opposes Plans To Transform The City Into GTA-Land

A clash of visions is unfolding in South Florida as Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz speaks out against a proposal to lean into the chaotic aesthetic of one of the world’s most famous video games. The controversy stems from a pitch made by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava to Rockstar Games, suggesting a formal collaboration between the county and the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI. The plan envisioned transforming parts of the city using visuals and characters from Vice City, including a potential motor festival featuring custom cars and tropical graphics designed for families.

Sheriff Cordero-Stutz is not convinced that blending reality with virtual mayhem is a good idea for public safety or the city’s image. In a pointed critique, she noted that the Grand Theft Auto franchise is fundamentally built around criminal activity, citing its depictions of murder, drug trafficking, and violence against police officers. According to the sheriff, these are exactly the types of behaviors her department fights to eliminate every single day, making it contradictory to embrace them as a marketing tool for the region.

The pushback isn’t just coming from law enforcement; political tensions are also simmering beneath the surface. Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez joined the sheriff in opposing the deal, arguing that Miami-Dade has spent years cultivating a global reputation as a hub for business and luxury tourism. He suggested that leaning into a fictionalized version of the city defined by crime would undermine those efforts and misrepresent the actual community they have worked so hard to build.

While spokespeople for Mayor Levine Cava have clarified that no official agreement has been signed or approved yet, the debate highlights a deep divide over how Miami should brand itself heading into an era of massive digital influence. For now, it remains unclear if Rockstar Games will pursue such an unconventional partnership or if the pressure from local officials will keep Vice City strictly confined to gaming consoles.
