Is the stock market open or closed on Labor Day? See holiday schedule

Investors looking to make moves this coming Monday should keep in mind that the United States stock markets will be taking a break. Both the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange are scheduled to remain closed on September 7 in observance of Labor Day, with regular trading operations resuming on Tuesday, September 8. This pause extends beyond stocks, as the U.S. bond market will also be shut down for the day according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

The holiday serves as a tribute to the social and economic achievements of American workers, tracing its roots back to late nineteenth century activism. Those early advocates fought for a federal recognition of the contributions laborers made toward the overall strength and prosperity of the nation. While the very first Labor Day celebration took place in New York City in 1882, it wasn’t until June 28, 1894, that President Grover Cleveland officially signed into law making the first Monday of September a national holiday.

Once the bells ring again on Tuesday morning, traders can expect an uninterrupted stretch of activity on Wall Street through most of autumn. There are no further interruptions planned until late November when markets close once again for Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26. Following that break, the final closure of the calendar year will occur on Friday, December 25, for Christmas Day.
