How Asia’s ultra-rich are investing and where wealthy Chinese are migrating, according to Maybank Singapore CEO

The landscape of wealth in Asia is shifting as the ultra-rich balance traditional stability with a newfound appetite for risk. According to Alvin Lee, the Singapore CEO of Maybank, high-net-worth individuals are diversifying their portfolios across a wide spectrum of assets. While gold remains a cornerstone due to its reliability as a store of value, there is a growing trend toward innovation. This shift is largely driven by a generational handoff, with younger heirs showing a significant openness to digital assets and cryptocurrencies compared to their predecessors.

Singapore continues to solidify its position as the region’s premier safe haven, benefiting from its political stability and favorable tax laws during times of global volatility. Lee noted that current geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have triggered a reversal of capital flows, with substantial amounts of wealth and physical gold returning to Singapore after previously moving toward Dubai. The city-state essentially acts as a shock absorber for the region, attracting offshore wealth whenever international crises arise.

Meanwhile, Malaysia is emerging as an increasingly attractive destination for wealthy Chinese nationals seeking new opportunities for residency and investment. Driven by valuations that appear far more accessible than those found in Singapore, these investors are flocking to Malaysian soil to relocate their families and businesses. This migration is manifesting most clearly in real estate acquisitions throughout Kuala Lumpur and Malacca, while Penang maintains its long-standing appeal as a hub for Chinese capital.
