Houthis seize key Yemeni port of Mocha in drive to take control of Red Sea coast

Houthi rebels have claimed control of the strategic port of Mocha, marking a significant escalation in their campaign to dominate Yemen’s Red Sea coastline. This move represents the most intense surge in fighting between the rebels and the Saudi-backed government in several years, effectively shattering the relative calm established by a UN-sponsored ceasefire in 2022. By seizing Mocha and surrounding territories including the city of Hays, the Houthis are attempting to solidify their grip on one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, moving them closer to controlling both ends of the Arabian peninsula.

For Saudi Arabia and the United States, these developments are viewed as a potential strategic disaster. Military analysts suggest that Houthi gains along the coast provide Iran and its proxies with unprecedented leverage over global shipping lanes, specifically at the Bab al-Mandeb strait. There are growing concerns that this offensive is part of a broader effort to open a second front in a larger confrontation between Iran and the U.S., utilizing territorial gains in Yemen to pressure Washington into lifting sanctions on Iranian oil tankers.

The humanitarian and military toll has climbed rapidly, with reports indicating hundreds of fatalities during recent bursts of violence. While Saudi Arabia has responded with dozens of airstrikes targeting Houthi positions, those strikes have yet to halt the rebel advance on the ground. Major General Tareq Saleh, commanding government forces, admitted his troops were forced into a strategic retreat south of Mocha to regroup after facing heavily planned attacks supported by Tehran.

Adding to the instability is a fractured landscape within the anti-Houthi coalition. Political divisions among various Yemeni factions and the withdrawal of financial support from previous allies like the UAE have left government forces struggling to maintain an integrated defense. As fighting spreads across provinces such as Taiz and Marib, observers warn that neither side appears ready to blink, turning the Red Sea coast into a high-stakes battlefield where regional power struggles directly impact global energy markets and international trade security.
