Energy Spikes and Tech Jitters Pull Wall Street Back From Peak

Wall Street retreated from its recent historic highs on Thursday as rising energy costs and volatility in the semiconductor sector created a challenging environment for investors. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2 percent, marking its second consecutive modest decline after hitting an all-time peak earlier in the week. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average remained virtually flat, the Nasdaq Composite took a harder hit, falling 0.4 percent as heavyweights in the artificial intelligence space faced selling pressure.

Much of the morning’s tension stemmed from a sharp jump in oil prices, with Brent crude climbing 4.6 percent to reach nearly 105 dollars a barrel. Global energy markets remain erratic as traders struggle to predict when geopolitical instability involving Iran will subside enough for industry operations to normalize. This surge in fuel costs typically weighs on broader equity sentiment by fueling inflation fears and increasing overhead for businesses across various sectors.

The downturn was further exacerbated by drops among key chipmakers like Nvidia and Broadcom, despite positive signals coming from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. The current climate has left little room for error for AI-driven stocks, which must now post exceptional profit growth to justify their steep valuations. Even non-tech firms are feeling this scrutiny; Levi Strauss saw its shares tumble despite beating profit estimates, simply because revenue figures failed to meet analyst hopes.

Adding to the complexity, Treasury yields fluctuated near levels not seen since 2002, driven by concerns over national debt and persistent inflation. While fresh data showing a resilient labor market suggests the U.S. economy is still humming along, higher yields make borrowing more expensive and often push investors away from high priced equities toward safer assets. Similar trends played out globally, with significant losses seen across Asian and European indexes throughout the session.
