Deadly Wave of Missile Attacks Shatters Calm at Riyadh International Airport

King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has become the center of a violent escalation after being struck for the second time in just two days. On Sunday, a projectile ignited a fire within one of the passenger halls, resulting in the death of a Pakistani resident and leaving eleven others injured. This follows a devastating assault on Saturday that left thirteen people dead and hundreds more wounded, marking one of the bloodiest episodes in recent memory for the region.

The Houthi rebels in Yemen have claimed responsibility for the onslaught, asserting that they deployed a combination of drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles to target the airport along with various oil facilities and another airfield in Dammam. In a stark warning to global travelers, the group urged passengers and airlines to avoid Saudi airspace entirely. They vowed to continue these deep-strike operations across the kingdom, excluding only the holy cities of Mecca and Medina from their list of potential targets.

International reaction has been swift and severe, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemning the strikes after confirmation that an American citizen was among those killed during the weekend’s chaos. President Donald Trump indicated that the United States is weighing options to move quickly against the Houthis, while British officials expressed horror at the loss of life and advised citizens against traveling to high-risk border zones. Meanwhile, Saudi officials described the coordinated attacks as war crimes and promised a firm response.

This surge in hostilities comes amid a broader collapse of previous ceasefires and reflects a deepening proxy struggle involving Iran. While Tehran has offered to facilitate dialogue between Riyadh and Houthi leadership, Saudi Arabia remains wary of allowing an Iranian-backed entity to solidify control over its southern neighbor. As casualties mount from multiple nationalities including India, Bangladesh, and several Arab states, the region now faces an uncertain path toward stability as both sides dig into their positions.
