Crypto exchange Binance takes on tradfi by courting rich investors to join its expanded wealth-management platform

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is making a bold push into traditional finance territory by opening its wealth-management platform to wealthy individual investors for the first time. The company announced that its Capital Connect platform, previously restricted to institutional investors, will now be accessible to individuals holding at least $1 million in assets. The move represents a significant shift for the crypto giant as it seeks to broaden its appeal beyond digital asset enthusiasts and compete directly with established financial institutions for high-net-worth clients.

Catherine Chen, head of Binance VIP and institutional at Binance, said the expansion comes in response to growing demand from individual investors who have been seeking access to the platform’s professional investment strategies. Capital Connect allows users to compare and invest in strategies managed by professional trading teams, with infrastructure that handles management fees, performance tracking, and risk metrics. Chen compared the setup to separately managed accounts in traditional finance, where investors can allocate funds to specific strategies without requiring trading teams to establish separate fund vehicles.

The platform has seen substantial growth in recent months, expanding from 106 portfolios managed by 35 professional trading teams in May to 212 portfolios from 77 teams as of September. While Capital Connect initially focused exclusively on cryptocurrency strategies, Chen noted that many trading teams have since incorporated traditional finance instruments into their approaches. The teams now range from conventional asset managers to crypto-native quantitative firms, with many operating across both markets.

The move turns the tables on traditional financial institutions that have been increasingly moving into Binance’s turf by adding digital asset offerings to their own platforms. Now one of crypto’s most prominent companies is making a play for wealthy investors who may be interested in diversified options spanning multiple strategies and asset classes. Binance has also been broadening its offerings tied to traditional financial assets, including around-the-clock perpetual futures linked to both pre-IPO and publicly traded companies, signaling ambitions that extend well beyond its cryptocurrency roots.
