At first glance, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max look remarkably similar to their predecessors, but beneath the glass lies a fundamental shift in how Apple handles photography. For the first time, the company has introduced a variable aperture to its main camera, a move that aims to bridge the gap between effortless snapshots for casual users and high-end precision for professionals. While competitors have experimented with this technology before, Apple executives explain that the timing was driven by a specific desire to boost image sensitivity without compromising clarity.
According to Matt Waldon, Apple’s Senior Director of Camera and Depth Hardware, the push began with a quest for better light sensitivity. While increasing sensor size is a common fix, it requires bulkier lenses and more processing power—trade-offs Apple wasn’t willing to make. Instead, they opted for a faster f/1.48 lens. However, such a wide opening creates challenges with sharpness when capturing subjects at certain distances. To solve this, engineers developed a variable aperture system that allows the phone to tighten the opening when maximum light isn’t required, ensuring images stay crisp across various scenarios.
Beyond technical necessity, the update provides creators with significantly more artistic freedom. By allowing users to adjust the aperture, Apple is offering deeper control over depth of field and shutter speeds. Professional videographers can now exercise more flexibility during shoots, while still photographers can achieve everything from creamy background blur to sharp starburst effects in highlight areas. Jeremy Hendricks of Apple’s product marketing team noted that expanding this creative range felt like the natural evolution for the Pro line.
The hardware making this possible is an engineering marvel hidden within a tiny footprint. The system utilizes six laser-cut blades made from a custom polymer composite designed for extreme durability and flexibility. These blades are thinner than a human hair and operate via a compact rotor mechanism to provide stepless adjustments. According to Waldon, six blades were chosen as the sweet spot to ensure smooth bokeh and pleasing aesthetic results while fitting within the strict spatial constraints of a handheld device.
