Pope Leo XIV returned home this Saturday to a cheering crowd of supporters, just four days after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his right lung. Speaking with Vatican News, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, the head of thoracic surgery at Agostino Gemelli University Hospital, revealed that the diagnosis happened entirely by accident. The pontiff had been feeling perfectly healthy and showed no respiratory symptoms, meaning the tumor was only spotted because he happened to be undergoing exams for unrelated reasons.
Dr. Margaritora noted that the location of the malignancy was critical, explaining that if the growth had been situated slightly higher in the lung, it likely would have gone unnoticed. This fortunate find served as a catalyst for the surgeon to emphasize the vital importance of preventative screenings, noting that many cancers remain silent and symptomless during their earliest and most treatable stages. While the operation to remove the lung adenocarcinoma was described as routine and complication free, it highlighted how easily such conditions can hide in plain sight.
Beyond the clinical success of the procedure, the surgeon praised the 71 year old leader as an ideal patient who required very little effort from his medical team. In a touching anecdote shared by Dr. Margaritora, hospital staff discovered the pope personally rearranging chairs in a makeshift chapel on his second day of recovery. When offered help, the American born pontiff simply insisted that since he was capable of doing it himself, he would see it through.
Even while confined to the hospital, Pope Leo XIV maintained a rigorous schedule, resuming work activities shortly after his surgery. His recovery period included high level diplomatic calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and several key meetings with top church officials including Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle and Cardinal Baldassare Reina. With his health now stabilized, the pope is expected to proceed with his planned apostolic journey to South America next month visiting Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.
