In a high stakes effort to flip the Florida governor’s mansion, the Democratic Governors Association has stepped in with a one million dollar investment in David Jolly’s campaign. The announcement comes just thirteen days before Election Day, providing a critical infusion of cash for a candidate who recently made public appeals for national financial backing to keep his bid competitive.
Jolly is attempting to achieve something no Democrat has managed since the turn of the century by defeating Republican Byron Donalds. According to DGA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe, the organization believes Jolly possesses genuine momentum because his platform focuses on affordability for working families rather than political theater. Donohoe described Jolly’s strategy as an aggressive grassroots operation that provides a viable path to victory despite the odds.
However, the financial divide between the two candidates remains staggering. While the fresh injection from the DGA is welcome, it barely scratches the surface of the spending gap. Byron Donalds has operated with a massive war chest, raising nearly 149 million dollars and deploying over 110 million of it into the race so far. In contrast, Jolly has struggled to match those numbers, having raised less than 22 million dollars overall.
Despite being outspent by tens of millions, Jolly is fighting back through targeted events and celebrity endorsements. His team revealed on Tuesday that a recent fundraiser featuring former President Bill Clinton in Miami successfully generated more than three million dollars. Even with these gains, data from Open Secrets indicates that Donalds still maintains a commanding advantage in liquidity, holding roughly 33 million dollars more in cash on hand as both campaigns enter their final stretch.
